BEIJING, November 9 (TMTPOST) — Chinese telecom giant Huawei will donate its openEuler open-source operating system to OpenAtom Foundation, the company announced at the 2021 Operating System Industry Summit held in Beijing on Tuesday. According to open information, openEuler is an open-source operating system for digital infrastructure, which can be deployed on servers, cloud computing, edge computing, and others. Its use scenes cover information technology, communication technology, and operational technology, providing a one-operating-system solution that supports a wide range of devices. This means that one development project will be able to cover a series of use scenes.

An advanced digital economy requires the strong support of digital infrastructure, while software will be the very soul of the infrastructure, Wang Tao, executive director of the board and chairman of ICT infrastructure managing board of Huawei said in his remark at the summit. Wang announced at the summit that openEuler’s assets, such as its codes, trademarks, and community infrastructure, will be donated to OpenAtom Foundation. The donation will help aggregate the power of the industry and help to build stronger digital infrastructure faster, Wang said.
Huawei will continue to invest in openEuler in technological innovation, ecosystem building, marketing, open-source development, and talent training after the donation, Deng Taihua, vice president of Huawei and president of computing product line said.
The donation includes copyright of million lines of codes and intellectual property license, over 8000 software packages verified by Huawei and the community, Huawei’s iSula, A-Tune, Stratovirt, secGear, and over 30 Chinese and English trademarks. Openeuler.org, openeuler.io and their subdomains are also included in the donation. In addition, community infrastructure such as build service and testing system, codehub, and community operation platform are donated as well.
The OpenAtom Foundation is dedicated to the promotion of public welfare for the global open-source community. OpenAtom, officially founded in Beijing in June 2020, is jointly initiated by leading companies such as Alibaba, Baidu, Huawei, Inspur, Qihoo, Tencent, and China Merchants Bank, etc. OpenAtom endeavors to build an open framework for industry and information technology, to develop international open-source communities, to improve the efficiency of industrial collaboration, and to empower all industries by offering neutral management of intellectual property, consultation of open source strategy and compliance, operation, and marketing services for open source projects, education and training, etc. with regard to for open source software, hardware, chips, and content.
