BEIJING, December 16(TMTPOST) - Chinese game giant Tencent will end 17-year-old game QQ Tang’s operation in April next year, the company announced on Thursday.
QQ Tang will officially end its operation in mainland China on April 20, 2022 due to strategic adjustment of the development team, according to the announcement. By then, users will no longer be able to log into QQ Tang.
The game has entered its natural end of the life cycle, internal sources at Tencent said. Users have not been very active in the game and therefore the game naturally comes to its end, sources pointed out.
QQ Tang’s recent update can date back to mid-2015, which shows Tencent has not been investing resources in maintaining the game. A number of QQ Tang players have complained on social media that the game cannot even run on Windows 10 and it should have suspended operation long ago.
Launched in 2004, QQ Tang is a multiplayer online casual game on PC similar to Korean developer Nexon’s Crazy Arcade. Players control characters in the game and strategically place bombs to trap and attack their competitors to win the game. The game has diverse game maps, play modes and characters for players to choose from. QQ Tang was one of the most popular online games in the early 2000s in China.
Many Chinese netizens have expressed on social media that QQ Tang was an important part of their childhood and that it makes them sad to see QQ Tang cease operation. The news is now trending on Chinese social media.
Tencent’s game business amassed revenue of 156.1 billion yuan (US$24.5 billion) in 2020, accounting for 32% of the company’s total revenue. Mobile games had remained key drivers for Tencent’s game business, especially Game for Peace, Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile. However, revenue from games on the PC platform saw a slight decrease in 2020.
