BEIJING, December 16 (TMTPOST) -The revenue of China’s video game industry reached 296.51 billion yuan in 2021, according to the 2021 China Video Game Industry Report released by China Game Publishers Association Publications Committee (GPC).
The revenue in 2021 shows a 6.4% year-on-year increase from the 17.826 billion yuan in 2020. The video game industry continued to grow in the Chinese market but the growth slowed by nearly 15% year on year.

The Chinese video game industry’s product portfolio in overseas markets diversified in 2021. Chinese companies had focused on strategy games, role-playing games and shooter games for overseas markets, which accounted for over 60% of the revenue in the past three years. In 2021, match-3 puzzle games, MOBA games and simulation games saw significant growth.
The U.S., Japan and South Korea were still the most important markets for Chinese video game companies though revenue from other markets had increased over years.
In 2021, China’s mobile game market achieved revenue of 225.538 billion yuan from actual sales, up 7.57% from last year, the report shows. Mobile games had remained the mainstream product in the Chinese market, accounting for 76.06% of the total revenue. However, the growth rate had also slumped by 25% despite continuous growth.
China’s video game user base continued to grow steadily in 2021 to 666 million people, registering a year-on-year growth of 0.22%. Although the video game industry is seeing slow growth in user base, it has remained to increase on a scale of millions each year in the past few years. But it appears the market is becoming saturated as the user base only grew by less than 1% this year when compared to that of 2020.
The new video game rules for minor protection had caused user scale to decrease in the second half of 2021 but resulted in a healthier user base structure for the industry.
