BEIJING, December 17th (TMTPOST) — Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group announced at its 2021 Investor Day event held between December 16 and 17 on Friday that its Southeast Asian e-commerce platform Lazada saw an 80% increase in annually active consumers in the past 18 months, reaching 130 million.
Lazada"s monthly active users also surged more than 70% to 159 million in the past 18 months.
Southeast Asia-based Lazada is now the seventh biggest e-commerce platform in the world.

Lazada has maintained strong growth in the past few years in the Southeast Asian market. Operating in six major countries in Southeast Asia, Lazada achieved a record-breaking gross merchandise volume at US$21 billion. The company’s net merchandise value saw a year-on-year increase of more than 60%.
The company will continue to build itself as Southeast Asia"s best e-commerce ecosystem and help more businesses in the region grow, Lazada"s CEO Li Chun said at the Investor Day event. Lazada will serve 300 million consumers in the Southeast Asian market and work to achieve the target of US$100 billion annual gross merchandise volume.
Providing e-commerce service mainly in Southeast Asia and China Taiwan, Shopee had garnered a transaction volume of US$56 billion in four quarters ending in late September. Lazada is currently the third biggest online retailer in the emerging markets in terms of gross merchandise volume, lagging behind Mercado Libre but ahead of South Korea"s Coupang and India"s Flipkart.
Founded in 2012, Lazada is an international e-commerce platform that mainly operates in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group acquired a controlling stake in the company in April 2016. According to a report released by market research firm Alvara in 2019, Lazada was the most popular shopping platform for millennials in Indonesia.
Internet giants in Southeast Asia, such as Lazada, Shopee, Grab and Goto, are working to seize the opportunities from the booming development of the e-commerce industry in the region. According to Alibaba, the e-commerce sector in Southeast Asia enjoys 27% growth on average each year. The pandemic has also brought about more opportunities for e-commerce in the region. By 2025, Southeast Asia"s Internet economy will reach US$363 billion, a report released by Google, Temasek and Bain Capital says.
