BEIJING, February 23 (TMTPOST) — International tech giant Apple is working with an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) company in South Korea on making the chip modules and packages for its cars, TheElec reported.
The report claims that the making of the chip modules and packages is expected to be completed in 2023.
TheElec links the new development to Foxconn’s alleged plan to build a dedicated assembly line in Thailand for Apple Car.
Apple has reportedly been selecting suppliers for its unconfirmed electric vehicle since December 2021.
It is said that the chip modules Apple is making are capable of supporting autonomous driving features, similar to those that are used on Tesla cars. Chip modules for smart cars generally focus on AI computing, integrating neural network processing unit, CPU, GPU and memory, etc.
Apple is taking an autopilot chip module development direction similar to Tesla, TheElec reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. When Tesla was developing its autopilot chip module, the company used Samsung’s memory and gave the assembly work to South Korean firm JCET STATSChipPAC Korea.
Apple has been working with the South Korean firm for a year, TheElec reported, citing sources. The project is said to be led by Apple Korea with bill of material rights for the project. The Apple subsidiary then chose South Korean OSAT firm, sources said. Later in August, the BBC said that Apple already had 66 road-registered driverless cars with 111 drivers registered to operate them. In 2020, it is reported that Apple was still working on hardware software and services related to autonomous driving. A likely launch date of 2024 was reported by Reuters in December 2020. Earlier in January, Korea IT News reported that South Korean suppliers were providing car components for Apple’s electric vehicle project.
The Korean car parts industry is said to have “started a war” to be part of the Apple Car supply chain.
