BEIJING, February 23 (TMTPOST)— China’s largest electric vehicle (EV) battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) is making more progress in new energy sector with the help of the country’s machinery giant Sany Heavy Industry Co., Ltd.

Fu Ning Line, China’s first highway route for electric heavy duty truck, officially went into operation earlier this week and the first electric residue trucks made by Sany also started delivery, CATL and Sany announced on Wednesday at an opening event for a pilot project of heavy duty truck with swappable electric batteries in Fujian, a province on China’s southeastern coast where CATL’s headquarters Ningde city is located in. Fu Ning Line runs between Ningde and the Port of Fuqing with the one-way distance of 175 kilometers (108.74 miles). CATL plans to establish a network of electric vehicle (EV) battery swap stations across Fujian in the future and the detailed steps would be released gradually.
As a major source of transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions, the heavy duty truck has urgent needs for electrification as China pledged to achieve the carbon neutrality by 2060. CATL said it designed its unique EV battery swap solutions for the existing charging styles were inconvenient and slow for refueling and cost high.
EVOGO, a solution CATL unveiled in January and set to initially launch in ten selected cities in China, consists of fast battery swap stations, an app and Choco-SEB, a chocolate bar-shaped swapping electric block compatible with 80 percent of global BEV platform-based vehicle models available. Choco SEB can achieve a weight energy density of over 160 Wh/kg and a volume energy density of 325 Wh/L, enabling a single block to provide a driving range of 200 kilometers.
Unlike Choco SEB’s mainly target sector passenger vehicles, the heavy duty truck has less restrictions in terms of volumetric energy density, so the electric heavy duty trucks and electric residue trucks running on the Fu Ning Line are all installed lithium iron phosphate batteries with higher volumetric energy density, which allows a full charging in three to five minutes, according to CATL.
