BEIJING, March 1 (TMTPOST) — European officials have recently requested international tech giants to limit Russian media’s operation on their social media platforms, CNN reported.

Politicians in Europe are asking tech companies to limit Russian media’s operation on social media through measures such as restricting their exposure and limiting their ability to make money on social media.

Russia has called for lifting restrictions on its state-owned media.

Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have already imposed harsher restrictions on Russian state-owned media.

Meta announced on Monday that it will restrict access to Russian state media outlets RT and Sputnik on its platforms across the European Union. Meta’s social media platforms include Facebook and YouTube.

“We have received requests from a number of Governments and the EU to take further steps in relation to Russian state-controlled media,” Nick Clegg, the company’s newly-named president of global affairs, said Monday on Twitter. “Given the exceptional nature of the current situation, we will be restricting access to RT and Sputnik across the EU at this time.”

Earlier on February 25, Meta banned Russian state media from advertising on its social media platforms and prevented them from making profits from advertising on its platforms. Twitter already banned RT and Sputnik from advertising on its platform in 2017.

Nathaniel Gleicher, head of Meta’s security policy said that the company had taken steps to protect the accounts in Ukraine and Russia.

In addition, Meta has also enhanced crackdown on the spread of false information and hacker activities on its platform. Meta took action against a hacking campaign connected to Belarus, according to a news report from Politico. It is reported that a hacker organization named Ghostwriter has been attacking the accounts of prominent Ukrainian figures on Facebook and Instagram. Ukrainians who were affected included politicians, military leaders and journalists. The organization used stolen accounts to spread false and negative information about Ukraine, such as videos that show Ukrainian soldiers surrendering to Russia.
