Li Auto Inc. delivered 8,414 Li ONEs, its only electric vehicle (EV) model, in February, decreasing 31.4% from the previous month when it delivered more than 10,000 units for three months in a row. However, Li, with the year-over-year (YoY) increase of 265.8% in monthly delivery, was still ranked the first for that month’s delivery among Chinese emerging EV makers which released results on Tuesday.
HOZON Auto’s brand Nezha, for the first time ascended to the second place by monthly delivery, shipped 7,117 units in February, down nearly 45% month-over-month (MoM) while up 255% YoY. Xpeng Inc., the annual delivery champion among China’s homegrown EV makers last year, delivered 6,225 EVs, representing a 51% MoM decline and a 180% YoY increase. Its archrival NIO’s delivery that month fell by 36.5% to 6,131 vehicles though it had a 9.9% YoY growth.
When it comes to lackluster delivery MoM growth, these manufactures gave various reasons. Li Auto said the holiday season and an outbreak of the pandemic in Suzhou have resulted in supply shortages and affected its production. NIO also noted its production of the NIO-JAC manufacturing plant was suspended durin the Chinese New Year holiday, also known as the Spring Festival, from January 31 to February 6. Besides, the company has carried out adjustment of production lines in February to prepare for the delivery of ET7, a flagship premium smart electric sedan. Xpeng said its plant located in Zhaoqing, a city near China"s southern manufacturing hub Guangzhou, has completed technology upgrade in the seven-day holiday, and resumed production in mid-February. Xpeng expected the upgrade to accelerate delivery of its significant order backlog. Though not mentioning the supply chain crunch, the company has recently delayed delivery of 460 version of its P5 sedan model due to severe shortages of the key parts including batteries resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. It made apology for the delay last week and admitted the supply chain woe created “huge uncertainties” for production of the new version.
