BEIJING, April 21 (TMTPOST) — Renowned mathematician Yau Shing-Tung announced on Wednesday that he will join China’s top-notch institution Tsinghua University as chair professor in mathematics.

The 73-year-old scholar, who is the first Chinese winner of the prestigious Fields Medal, announced that he will retire from Harvard University to teach full-time at Tsinghua University. He hopes to help China excel in the field of mathematics within a decade.

Born in 1949 in China’s Shantou city, Yau was awarded the Fields Medal in 1982, in recognition of his contributions to partial differential equations, the Calabi conjecture, the positive energy theorem, and the Monge–Ampère equation. Yau is considered one of the major contributors to the development of modern differential geometry and geometric analysis.

At the appointment ceremony on Wednesday, Yau said that he would take over the torch from his teachers and pass down to the new generation of mathematic talents in China.

Yau believes that mathematics is the truth that does not change overtime and that its beauty and truthfulness will drive science forward. He encourages students to study the essence of mathematics.

Yau has been dedicated to improving mathematic education in China. He started many mathematic competitions in China and established mathematic research centers at a number of Chinese institutions, such as Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University and Southeast University.

“I hope that young students and mathematicians will not only pursue truth but also care about the development of their country,” Yau said. “I hope they will contribute to the development of China and the study of mathematics.”

“I believe scholars like Mr. Yau will bring Tsinghua’s mathematic faculty to a whole new level and train a batch of elite talents,” Tsinghua University President Wang Xiqin said.
