BEIJING, October 4  (TMTPOST)— BYD Co. is accelerating expansion in European market through a new partnership which brings the China’s largest electric vehicle (EV) maker a massive deal.

Sixt SE, a Germany-based car rental company, agreed to purchase about 100,000 pure-electric vehicles from BYD in the coming six years, and the initial delivery is set to take place in the fourth quarter of the year for Sixt’s European customers, according to Sixt’s statement on Tuesday.

Sixt said BYD vehicles would first serve customers in Germany, France, the Netherlands and the UK, and the first model it plans to introduce is BYD Atto 3, a full-electric C-segment SUV. All the other BYD models would then become part of Sixt’s fleet, as part of efforts for significant increase in application of EVs. Sixt aims to improve electrification by making 70% to 90% of its fleet in Europe with EVs by 2030, covering a wide range of manufacturers and models.

The new partnership remarks a major step as BYD is speeding up exploration in Europe. BYD announced Monday that it sold 201,259 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in September, with a 183.07% year-over-year increase. The automaker has set new sales record for the seventh consecutive month since it ceased the production of cars powered only by internal combustion engines since March, and maintained triple-digit monthly growth since entering into 2022.

Out of the sales of more than 200,000 units, BYD exported 7,736 NEVs to overseas market in September, rising 51.92% from the previous month. The recent move suggests the EV giant would remain rapid growth beyond China.

On Setpember 28, BYD announced at an NEV event that the first models in Europe would include Han, Tang and Atto 3, which are poised to release specific prices during an auto show in Paris in October. The company also plans to start deliveries of these models in many European countries such as Norway, Denmark, Netherland, Sweden, Germany and Belgium in late December and further explore markets in UK and France by the end of the year.
