BEIJING, March 22 (TMTPOST) — Sony Entertainment announced on Monday that it has reached an acquisition agreement with Haven Entertainment Studios, a game developer led by industry veteran Jade Raymond and headquartered in Montreal, Canada.
Sony Entertainment did not disclose details of the agreement in the announcement.
Haven Studios was founded in 2021 with capital from Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game developer has a team of experienced and seasoned game makers, with some of the team members having over ten years of experience in the industry. Some team members had participated in the development of popular titles. Its founder Raymond created Motive Studios at Ubisoft Entertainment. She is also one of the main creators behind popular video game series Assassin’s Creed.
Haven Studios is now making a game for Sony’s PlayStation platform, which will be its first PlayStation game. The game will be a new AAA multiplayer game, according to Raymond in a blog post.
“Our first new IP for PlayStation is on track to deliver a AAA multiplayer experience with a vision to build a systemic and evolving world focused on freedom, thrill, and playfulness that will keep players entertained and engaged for years,” Raymond said, giving a description of the game that is currently under development.
“Haven Studios is an emerging studio with an exceptional team of talent, and we’re delighted to welcome them into PlayStation as our first game development studio in Canada,” said Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment. “The studio’s focus on creating an original AAA multiplayer game will not only flex the power of PlayStation 5 but will further expand upon the diverse catalog of gaming experiences that can only be found on PlayStation.”
The video game industry is undergoing massive change with frequent mergers and acquisitions. Last January, Sony acquired Bungie at US$3.6 billion, the developer behind the popular sci-fi shooter game Destiny and Halo. Microsoft also expanded its investment portfolio by acquiring Activision Blizzard at US$69 billion, a record-breaking acquisition for Microsoft.
