Beijing, June 23 (TMTPOST) – An NIO test car went off and crashed from the third floor at NIO’s headquarters in Shanghai on Thursday, killing two test drivers on the car.
The incident happened at around 17:22 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a news report of the Paper. The test car, carrying two test drivers, crashed from the third floor. The two test drivers, named Du and Zhang, were severely injured by the crash. Both Du and Zhang passed away after being transferred to the hospital.
NIO has not responded to National Business Daily’s request for confirming the incident. But some sources at NIO have confirmed the incident.
The photos of the car crash suggest that the crashed car is a test car and the top side of the car might hit the ground first during the fall from the third floor. Cement debris can be seen around the car. Media speculate that the test car might be the NIO ET5, an NIO model that has not been delivered yet.
Netizens online have expressed concerns over the reasons why the car “lost control” and went off the third floor. NIO has not responded to such concerns.
NIO is a Chinese multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Shanghai, specializing in designing and developing electric vehicles. The company is known for its development of battery-swapping stations for its vehicles as an alternative to conventional charging stations.
The company has delivered four car models, which are ES8, ES6, EC6 and ET7. Statistics from NIO show that the company has delivered 204,900 units in total. In Q1 2022, the company delivered around 25,800 units, registering an year-on-year increase of 37.6%.
NIO plans to deliver three new models—ET7, ES7 and ET5—in 2022. The three new model were developed based on the NT2.0 platform.
